How trading profits are taxed in Argentina

Residents are taxed on worldwide income. (1) Impuesto a las Ganancias: foreign-source financial capital gains from buying/selling instruments are taxed at a proportional 15% when the asset is in foreign currency; interest and other benefits follow the progressive individual scale up to 35%. Forex/CFD profits from offshore brokers are foreign-source income and must be declared. (2) Impuesto sobre los Bienes Personales: foreign-held assets (foreign broker accounts) are taxable once you are an Argentine tax resident. (3) Declaration: foreign accounts/assets must be declared; Argentina exchanges data via CRS and FATCA, so offshore broker accounts are automatically reported to ARCA. The PAIS tax expired 23-Dec-2024; a 30% Ganancias perception still applies to certain card/FX consumption and is recoverable. Authority ARCA/AFIP: https://www.arca.gob.ar. Rates as of the review.

The detail

Moving money in and out

KEY: Argentina's 'cepo cambiario' was significantly loosened for INDIVIDUALS in April 2025 but is NOT fully lifted. As of 2026: individuals can buy USD in the official market (MULC) with NO monthly nominal cap (the old USD 200/month limit was removed April 2025). HOWEVER a 'restriccion cruzada' remains: buyers must sign a sworn declaration not to trade dollar-MEP or CCL securities for 90 days before and after buying official USD. Companies remain heavily restricted. PAIS tax ELIMINATED (expired 23-Dec-2024). FX floats within a band that from 2-Jan-2026 adjusts monthly by INDEC inflation; initial band ~ARS 914.78 (floor) to ~ARS 1,529.03 (ceiling). Multiple dollars persist (oficial vs MEP vs blue). As of May-July 2026. Source: https://www.bcra.gob.ar/en/exchange-rate-band-regime/

Local rails: bank wire via CBU (bank account) or CVU (virtual account/wallets); MercadoPago; debit/credit cards. For the LOCAL/CNV route, funding a broker (ALyC) is by ARS or USD transfer (credited within ~24h). USD ('dolar MEP') is bought through a CNV-authorised broker/bank. MercadoPago allows buying dolar MEP but can only move USD to a USD savings account in your OWN name - no third-party USD transfers. Offshore brokers typically require card or e-wallet/international transfer, and moving ARS abroad hits FX controls. ARS is highly volatile with multiple exchange rates (official vs MEP vs blue), so deposit/withdrawal value in USD terms swings materially.

What this means for choosing a broker

Tax is charged on what you made, not on where the broker is. What the broker's location does change is the paperwork you will have: a local entity reports in Argentina, a foreign one does not, and the statement you file comes from whichever entity signed you.
